Today a bit different post, because it’s going to be about film music. Or more precisely, about music from a specific film to which I return to from time to time. And every time it evokes the same positive emotions and makes it really hard to sit still. This is not about any new film, but… about the music from the film from 2016 – „La La Land”!
After a quick calculation, I found out that when this film hit the cinemas I was already 30 years old. Which doesn’t change the fact that what motivated me to buy a ticket for “La La Land” was… Ryan Gosling starring in it : ) Yes, yes, it’s not only youngsters who go to the cinema to see their favorite (and coincidentally handsome?) actors. However, just like in life, it’s not just about looks, because as they say: “looks attract, but character holds”. Ryan attracted a few films back with his looks, but then it turned out that looks don’t get in the way of his acting. And that’s how I ended up in the cinema to see “La La Land”. Interestingly, I haven’t watched this film again to this day, and I only remember some scenes from it. But I remember that it was one of those moments where the music turned out to be more interesting than the plot. And that I left the cinema, went to the store and bought a CD with the soundtrack from this film and listened to it the whole way home from the cinema. That was probably the only situation when I thought that a cinema in a shopping centre was a good idea!
The music from the film “La La Land” is simply exceptional! And the jury recognised this by awarding an Oscar to its composer Justin Hurwitz. The music has so much energy, emotions, harmony and space… and the song “Another Day of Sun” I should definitely listen to every day after waking up! What makes it so magical? Honestly? I have no idea. Are Gosling and Emma Stone’s vocals so exceptional? Absolutely not. But the entire soundtrack is so different and yet so coherent that there’s probably no wrong time to return to it. And especially during winter afternoons and evenings.
