I was encouraged to watch „Here” by its trailer. Robert Zemeckis on one side of the camera, and on the other the duo that we knew and loved – Tom Hanks and Robin Wright – the dream team from “Forrest Gump”. How was it? You don’t change a good team? Well: it depends.
In general, the idea for the film is interesting – to present the history of many (even very many) characters like a story… of the house (or even the room) in which they lived. Even to present the history of many generations even from the period when this house was not built yet. The stories about the lives of the film’s characters intertwine smoothly in terms of the technical side of this film. However, after a certain “round”, when we learn fragments of the lives of several families, we ask ourselves (or at least I asked myself this question sitting in the cinema): “Okay, but what next? When will something start happening?”.
Maybe it’s a matter of my personal expectations as a viewer, but I was hoping for more plot twists and some… interesting story. And yet, yes, they were correct stories, with some funny dialogues, good, natural acting, but … without a surprising plot. As a result, the film was quite … boring for most of it. Until we get to the moment when the characters start to get old, get sick, regret various decisions in life and leave. Then the film becomes depressing and sad. And leaves us with the thought that karma does not always come back and even if we sacrifice our happiness for someone, fate may never reward us for it.
Robert Zemeckis’ film “Here” is advertised as a film about love, loss and hope. Love and loss are present, unfortunately I did not find hope.
And do you know what I will remember most from this film? A bay window, i.e. a specific niche and a low windowsill, on which you can sit and admire the views outside the window. A bit too little for a film over 1.5 hours long, don’t you think?
