I’m not sure whether you also have had this feeling recently that there are fewer and fewer books that can absorb you, draw you in so much that you forget about reality. And I used to experience this quite often in the past. And as a child, I often stayed up all night because I wanted to know „what happened next” to the protagonists of the book. Maybe it’s the result of being overstimulated, or the fact that I come across good books, but not ones with the “wow” effect. (where every 5th page there’s a plot twist, and every 7th we laugh until we cry). It’s also a fact that I reach for fiction less often – I watch it more often on one of the platforms instead of reading (but choosing the Spanish version of the film for peace of mind – then I feel like I’m developing my language skills, and not just watching a movie with a happy ending in the language I love). But, just to be clear – there are interesting books, which I mention here, among others.
And now it’s time for the hero of today’s post. To be honest, I had doubts whether I should publish this post in other language that Polish – simply because the book is available in Polish only (at least for the moment). But then I thought that the reason why I’m sharing the information here in English as well, is to share with you my view on certain topics and through that you can also get to know more what happens in Polish bookstores, cinemas and theatres. As all these are inseparable elements of the culture of certain country.
But comming but to the book I’m going to tell about about today. It’s entitled: „About sewing. Simply, creatively and fashionably” (in Polish: „O szyciu. Prosto, kreatywnie i modnie”), written by Jan Leśniak. And this book was a big surprise for me, because when I decided to read it I did not expect anything more than tips … about sewing. And I got much more. Many stories that accompanied the author, a fashion designer, during his professional adventure with sewing. Stories that were so true, full of emotions – joy, happiness, doubt, sadness, resignation – stories that in the era of Instagram successes or maxims such as: “If you want soemthing, you can achieve it”, “It all depends on you”, etc., etc., seem almost unbelievable. But we can identify with them. Confirm ourselves in the belief that if we do not know what to do next with our lives to be happy and professionally fulfilled, we are not strange or alone in our dilemmas. That our plan B may turn out to be our plan A. That sometimes we should trust our intuition or rely on chance or coincidence. Because it often happens that we do something we know, that we are theoretically good at, but we do it just for ourselves, we do not share it simply because no one is interested in us. We lack happiness. And in reality we have no guarantee that it will come. And I think that is why these stories of Jan Leśniak woven between materials and sewing accessories appeal to me so much. Because they are true, and on the other hand they have a pinch of hope and optimism. In addition, they are written in such a great, lively language that even if you cannot sew even a button, after reading this book you would like to sign up for a sewing course with this gentleman!
